SOLD - Leadlight Suite by E F Troy

One of the charms of Adelaide is the profusion of late 19th Century villa style residences which have survived the best and worst efforts of renovators and developers. The large frontages often with tiled verandahs and cast iron lacework lead into broad hallways, opening into large airy rooms that are decorated with elaborate plasterwork ceilings and finely detailed woodwork. One of the endearing features of these houses is the use of coloured and leaded glass to add rich detail to windows and doorways. There was a vibrant market for leadlighters and although their work was originally mainly for churches, secular use in the domestic and civic sense expanded in an era when Art Nouveau designs became fashionable and coloured glass was ‘de rigueur’ for the well to do.
Adelaide was fortunate to have the services of Troy, Vosz and others to create the glowing masterpieces still enjoyed today, for example, the SA Museum, the Adelaide Town Hall and the Brookman Building (at the University of SA). Domestic architecture retains a portion of this rich treasury of workmanship and design.
