George II Faux Tortoiseshell tea caddy

An Early Georgian faux tortoise-shell tea caddy with bronze mounted decorations.

George II (c.1770) English tea caddy of an unusual sarcophagus form, in "as found" condition, showing the patina of age, with associated losses and commensurate wear and tear. It is unlikely that this item has ever been refinished. The metal mounts and escutcheon, Baroque in style, are of the highest quality cast brass, finely pierced, well fettled and line engraved. The brass plates conform very well to the curved surfaces to which they are applied (by brass pins). Note that the four corners of the top have white porcelain studs that secure cast Tudor brass roses (front right rose missing). The original lock and strike remain, as does one of the internal lids. This lid has been burl decorated. The lid decoration exactly matches the decoration applied to the underside of the top of the caddy (thereby establishing it as an original). The foil linings are good.

This caddy is offered "un-restored" and "un-conserved" because the inherent fine quality of the aged finish should be considered as a remarkable survivor of about 250 years of use. Some will view this caddy as a wreck, others a treasure. We offer it to the latter group of customers.
